It was good, though when I first started I was hoping it would be a little more like the Junco series. It became a little more YA than I would've liked towards the end.
So great to read something from Tier's POV. It was nice to see that there actually is someone out there who genuinely loves Junco.
I was disappointed with Junco in this one. I can handle the crazy, but the crying and letting herself be bossed around was so out of character... and kind of annoying.
Honestly, it is so fricken refreshing to read about someone with morals who doesn't allow them to get in the way. I love a kick-ass, capable heroine who can kill without blinking an eye, but doesn't necessarily go around slaughtering everything in sight. And I have to admit to hating heroines who allow their morals to get in the way, and when/if they finally kill someone, they bitch and bemoan about it for ages. Thank god Junco is not one of the latter types.
Writing style was a little different, and sometimes too fast, but it was exciting and quick-paced, and made me laugh quite a bit.
Audiobook: This was not a bad audiobook. The voice actor did a great job, and there were only a few times I came close, but not quite, to rolling my eyes. It was on the tip of my tongue (so to speak), but never let loose. This is a book I definitely wouldn't read by myself. Actually, I tried for a few short chapters, and went right back to the audiobook. For some reason, when I read to myself, I'm more cynical. I don't know if it's because I can see the words, so I feel more sucked in by, or invested in, the story. Whatever it is, audiobooks have a habit of getting me through something I can't read myself. However, there are some audiobooks I can't listen too because they're too boring, and I need to actually read the story myself. I have no idea how my brain works.
The extra star is for the decent part from about 60% to 95%. Everything else before and after is only one star. I hated Jet. I really did.
I was really excited to start this book, and when I did start it, it was a solid four stars in my mind. And then all of a sudden, in one fateful scene when Bree met up with Jake at the bus, it went from four stars straight down to two stars and got worse. Everything from that moment was absolutely miserable to get through. And not the good kind of misery that leaves you with bated breath and an ache in your chest. It was more the misery that leaves you chanting in your head, "Hurry up and finish. Hurry up and finish." I did not like Jake and Abby's relationship. I thought they were better flirting than when they finally decided to try a relationship. It did get slightly better at the (very) end... but the most miserable parts to get through were 1-starrable, so I'll bump this up to two. So my final thought: thank God it's finished!
Maysie's popularity issues were a deal breaker for me. And although I originally thought it was a nice twist that the male protagonist had a girlfriend instead of boning everything that had tits, the fact that he constantly proclaimed his attraction to Maysie, and constantly pursued her, yet refused to break up with his girlfriend, was deplorable. It's not like he didn't have time. Him and Maysie were chasing each other around the mulberry bush for ages. Also, Maysie was just an idiot to allow other people to screw up her relationship with the "love of her life". I quote that term, not because it was actually used, but because who the f*ck screws up a relationship with someone they truly love because of something so stupid? The end did redeem itself some. I did like that Maysie finally stood up for herself, but it was made into too much of a big deal. And really, she should have been doing that from the beginning. I don't think it would have taken anything away from the story, and mostly likely would have enhanced it if we didn't have to put up with such a sniveling idiot for a heroine.
